Western United striker poised for major A-League milestone

Western United striker Besart Berisha is poised to break a major milestone in the Hyundai A-League.

The A-League legend is just one win away from the magical ton, with 100 wins as a player in the A-League.

Berisha’s United plays on Friday night in the Queensland capital, ironically, against one of his former clubs Brisbane Roar.

The forward began his A-League journey in 2011 with Roar, arriving as a relative unknown before smashing 48 in 76 games.

He joined Melbourne Victory for the start of the 2014/15 season. At Victory, he scored 68 in 110 before leaving for a stint in the J-League.

He has won four championships in total (two with each club) netting 116 goals in 186 games before joining the Green and Black this season. With four goals in Green and Black, Berisha has 121 league goals in Australia.

It’s another important game for United after three points over Victory on Sunday pushed Mark Rudan’s men back up to fourth on the ladder ahead of Round 10 starting on Friday night.

Speaking with SEN radio’s Time On show in Melbourne, Berisha said he was looking forward to something special this season with his new A-League club.

“I feel like we’re doing well,” said Berisha.

“You cannot expect too much, but we are a great team with leaders. Having been in the A-League so long, I feel personally, we’re doing really great.

“Definitely Western United is moving forward and we have a great supporter base and it’s getting better every week.

“We have to really play good football week by week. And play our way. If we do that, I believe with the players we have at the end of the season there’s a great chance of something special,” added Berisha, who with Shane Smeltz jointly holds the record for fastest to 50 goals, both getting to the mark in 79 appearances.

After a trio of reversals, the United man said it was “a good reaction” to defeat Victory 3-1 last Sunday in Geelong, where Berisha scored twice with his head.

“We have to understand, Brisbane will be really difficult to play. They lost on the weekend and they want to bounce back. We have to prepare for a very difficult game.”
