Western United sign experienced midfielder Víctor Sánchez

Sanchez

Western United is pleased to announce the signing of Spanish midfielder Víctor Sánchez.

Sánchez joins on a two-year deal that will see him wear green and black until at least the end of the 2021/22 season.

The 33-year-old is highly experienced, having made over 300 appearances in Spain’s topflight, La Liga, including a spell at giants FC Barcelona between 2008 and 2011.

After a decorated career in Europe, Sánchez is excited to begin a new chapter in Victoria’s west.

“I am very happy to be joining an ambitious club like Western United and I want the fans to know I am committed and enthusiastic about the challenge ahead,” Sanchez said

“I want to say thank you to those who have made this move come true. I am extremely grateful for the trust they have shown in me.

“I am looking forward to joining the team as soon as possible. We hope to have a great season.”

Sanchez spent several years in Barcelona’s youth team, before being promoted to the senior squad, where he made 12 appearances in two seasons.

He made his way to RCD Espanyol in 2011, going on to make 270 appearances across all competitions for the Barcelona based club.

The Spaniard is primarily a defensive midfielder but is also capable of playing in defence, giving United Head Coach Mark Rudan flexibility heading into the new A-League season.

United’s GM Football Ante Kovacevic believes Sanchez will add class and experience to the squad in their quest for silverware.

“Victor is a consummate professional. His lengthy experience in Spain’s topflight will be a benefit to the club,” Kovacevic said.

“The defensive midfield role is key to a team’s defensive and offensive play and adding a La Liga calibre player to our team is a massive coup.

“As a former captain of Espanyol, he will bring natural leadership qualities to the group that will definitely help inspire the team to success, with commitment and passion, to our collective footballing ambitions.”

Sánchez will join his teammates for training in early December in preparation for the 2020/21 A-League season, which is set to begin on 27 December.
