The Weekly Wrap

NPL

The Western United weekly wrap is a quick-fire around the grounds summary of results from our NPL 3 men’s and NPLW women’s teams.

This report sums up the games from the week ending Sunday 23 May 2021.

NPL 3 – Western United Academy Teams

The NPL teams were away to Nunawading City in Forest Hill on Saturday afternoon.

The Under 21’s kicked-off the day with a comfortable 6-0 win over an inexperienced side. James Tountas and Abel Walatee each scored a brace with Leighton Lauton and Jake Najdovski each scoring a single.

The senior team faced a dangerous and in-form Nunawading City and with both teams scoring in the 10th minute, (Many Aguek for United) the scene was set to be an exciting match. Neither team were able to convert their first half chances which meant both teams went into the half time break locked at 1-1. Many Aguek got the breakthrough the team were looking for, when he scored his second of the match in the 50th minute giving United the lead before completing his hattrick in the 72nd minute. An 87th minute reply from Nunawading ensured a tense finish to what was an exciting match.

NPLW – Calder United FC

Our women in the NPLW were away to Box Hill at Wembley Park on Saturday afternoon in what can be described as beautiful conditions for football.

Our Under 19’s and reigning 2019 premiership team conceded an early goal in the 24th minute and weren’t able to capitalise on any of their own chances. Our girls ultimately went down 0-1 in a tough battle with the girls from Box Hill. The consensus was that it just wasn’t our day and the girls are confident of getting a result in the return fixture scheduled for round 14. This brings the team’s streak to three loses on the trot and they will need to turn things around if they’re to keep any pressure on ladder leaders NTC U17.

Our senior women had an enjoyable day out on Wembley Park comfortably defeating Box Hill three goals to nil. After several half chances in the first 10 minutes, our women opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Catherine Zimmerman picked the ball up in her own half via a throw-in and played a delightful 35 yard ball over and behind the Box Hill defence for Harriet Withers to run onto and calmly place past the goalkeeper.

At the 40th minute mark after numerous attacks towards the Box Hill goal, Aleks Sinclair followed up a shot from Withers which was saved by the keeper and scored her first goal of the game taking Calder into the half time break with a 2-0 lead.

The second half was much the same with our women able to enjoy plenty of possession and create many chances. The third goal of the match came in the 85th minute with Catherine Zimmerman again picking the ball up from a throw-in and putting in a beautiful cross to Aleks Sinclair who expertly guided the ball with her head past the keeper and scoring her second goal of the match against her former club.
