Uskok excited for return of competitive football

Western United’s 2020/21 campaign will start with a bang with seven matches in the first month of the new A-League season.

The fixture, which was revealed on Tuesday, confirmed that United will begin their season on Monday, 28 December, before playing six matches in January 2021.

Speaking with wufc.com.au, United defender Tomi Uskok said the team cannot wait for the return of competitive football.

“We’re looking forward to getting on the park and playing games,” Uskok said.

“We’ll start with practice games now but we’re definitely excited to get started with competitive matches.”

United begin the season with seven matches in the first four weeks, which includes a number of mid-week games.

Despite a more condensed fixture than previous seasons, Uskok said the squad will be fully prepared, having experienced a similar situation at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

“I think we did it last year with the hub situation, I think we had the most games out of anyone, so it’s nothing new to us.

“We’ve got a good backroom staff to manage us. Everyone just tries to stay fit and recover as well as possible.”

The Green and Black kick off their season against Adelaide United on Monday, 28 December at GMHBA Stadium, Geelong.

United scored eight goals against the Reds last season across their two meetings, and Uskok is hoping for that sort of attacking performance in round 1.

“We hope so, but obviously they’re going to have a very different team and we’re just looking to start off well and hopefully get three points to kick start our season.”

Round 1 will be the first time fans are allowed into a Western United home game since March after the COVID-19 pandemic forced most of the remainder of the 2019/20 season to be played behind closed doors.

Uskok said he and the squad are looking forward to welcoming back fans from across the west.

“It’s going to be good, the first time in a while. It was a bit different in the hub with no crowds.

“We’re looking forward to them coming and supporting us and hopefully we start off well.”
