Western United’s Hyundai A-League journey has begun in the best possible fashion after securing a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix on Sunday afternoon.

In a history-making day for the club, Besart Berisha’s first-half strike ensured Mark Rudan’s side claimed all three points in their inaugural A-League fixture.

The win snapped Phoenix’s three-match winning streak at home and saw United become just the fifth team in A-League history to win their opening match in the competition.

But after Sunday’s historic victory, United’s attention will now quickly shift to Saturday’s first-ever home game against Perth Glory at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium.

And what a momentous occasion it promises to be for the Green and Black.

After a brilliant start to the campaign, Mark Rudan’s side will be desperate to build on the first-up performance and keep the momentum rolling.

The club’s growing supporter base will finally get to see their team in action for competition points and witness history in the process.

For the fans, the opportunity to witness the club’s first-ever match at home is something truly special.

The chance to see the likes of international stars Alessandro Diamanti and Panagiotis Kone, along with the A-League’s all-time leading goalscorer Besart Berisha is certainly an exciting prospect.

And with a real mix of experienced stars and a group of exciting youngsters in the squad, there’s plenty to like about this Western United team.

Geelong’s picturesque GMHBA Stadium will host nine of United’s home games this season, including Saturday’s opener against Perth.
