Scottish Premiership reunion for United and Sydney FC stars

Two Australians who locked horns in the Scottish Premier League (SPL) are set to go head-to-head on Sunday when Western United take on the reigning Hyundai A-League champions Sydney FC.

2007/08 SPL top scorer Scott McDonald is set to run out in the green and black of United.

Meanwhile, former Hearts and Dundee United defender Ryan McGowan will line up for Sydney FC.

They’ve dueled several times over in Scotland, most recently in 2015 when McGowan’s Dundee United traveled to McDonald’s Motherwell.

McGowan got the better of his fellow Aussie on that day as Dundee United won 2-0 on the road.

The two weren’t always opponents. They teamed up at the international level.

In 2012, McDonald and McGowan lined up together for the Socceroos. It was, coincidentally against Scotland, with the Socceroos going down 3-1 in Edinburgh.

They’ll be on opposing ends once more, however, when the Sky Blues travel to Geelong.

Despite the anticipated duel between the two players, Sunday’s clash holds great importance for another reason. McGowan’s Sydney can take the top spot on the ladder with a win on Sunday, jumping ahead of Melbourne City.

McDonald’s United meanwhile are going for their fourth win of the season to potentially cement a place in the top four.
