Rudan hails clean sheet and three points in Brisbane

Western United head coach Mark Rudan was delighted with Friday night’s comprehensive 2-0 win over Brisbane Roar at Suncorp.

A first-half goal to wingback Connor Pain – his first in the A-League for the Green and Black – and a touch of magic from Besart Berisha laid the platform for the win.

The victory coming after a short turnaround following Sunday’s 3-1 in the heat at GMHBA against Melbourne Victory.

“I thought we played a very, very intelligent game of football,” Rudan told reporters after the game.

“A smart game plan. And executed to perfection by the players.

“We defended when we needed to. And you all saw how hard Diamanti worked when he didn’t have the ball. Kone as well. It’s a team effort.

“Our values shone through tonight.

“And we had a distinct game plan to break through if they played with a back three or back four.”

United is now on 16 points and in the third spot on the ladder ahead of the remainder of the round.

“More importantly was the short turnaround for us. They are sapping conditions up here [in Brisbane],” added Rudan.

“First time [for a clean sheet] since round one, too.”

The Green and Black meet the Red and Black of the Wanderers next Friday night in Sydney.
