Western United recorded an important win at AAMI Park on Sunday night, defeating Brisbane Roar 1-0 in a highly entertaining match.

Line-up

Steven Lustica and Alessandro Diamanti returned to the match day squad via the starting eleven and bench respectively.

Lachie Wales made his second start of the season, replacing Besart Berisha up front.

Ryan Scott retained his spot in goal as Filip Kurto recovers from a concussion.

The match

Brisbane went close to breaking the deadlock after 20 minutes through a long-range Riku Danzaki strike, which was superbly saved by United keeper Ryan Scott.

United’s first chance came soon after as Dylan Pierias picked out Lachie Wales, who couldn’t generate enough power on his shot to trouble Roar keeper Jamie Young.

Iker Guarrotxena tried from distance but his well-hit strike from outside the area landed in the chest of Young.

United continued to create chances at AAMI Park and went close to scoring moments later.

Wales picked out Guarrotxena who chested it towards Pierias, before the youngster’s well-timed volley went straight at the Roar keeper.

Pierias had a couple more chances after the break.

The wing-back went one on one with Jamie Young but had his shot saved.

Moments later, Alessandro Diamanti made an instant impact off the bench, scooping the ball to Pierias who couldn’t keep his strike down.

Pierias finally got his goal in the 72nd minute with a stunning header.

He latched onto Diamanti’s superb cross before firing his header into the bottom corner.

In the dying minutes, United thought they had their second after Connor Pain put the ball into an empty net following a counter-attack. The goal was disallowed after VAR determined that the ball hit Pierias’ arm in the build-up.

It didn’t matter however as Mark Rudan’s side held on for their fourth win of the season.
