Moric pleased with United’s NPL debut

Ante Moric

Western United’s NPL team got their inaugural season off to the perfect start, defeating Box Hill United 2-1 last Sunday.

Trailing 1-0 in the 70th minute, the Green and Black scored two late goals to secure the win. Ayom Majok and Manylauk Aguek each got on the score sheet in the club’s first NPL fixture.

Head Coach Ante Moric was pleased with his side’s performance at Wembley Park after only being together for a short period.

“The most important thing about last weekend was the boys putting together what we’ve been doing in pre-season,” Moric said.

“In bits and pieces throughout the game it was fantastic.

“They’ve come from all around Victoria, and they’ve come together very quickly.

“And values – it’s all about values which we’re trying implement at the club, which is important.

“And they’re buying in – a lot of them haven’t just bought in but they’re believing.

“It was a very promising start and we’re very happy as a club.”

United’s NPL season continues this Saturday at Epping Stadium against Melbourne Victory.

Victory kicked their season off with a 2-1 win over Springvale White Eagles.

Moric is hoping for some improvements on the round 1 performance and is expecting a high-quality game against Victory.

“A little bit of what we did in the first game and obviously there are improvements.

“A coach can’t always talk about the positives – we have to look at the negatives.

“They’re a good side, they’ve been together for a while. We’re new but that’s no excuse.

“To follow up on what we did in the first game and improve in certain areas… I think we’ll have a very decent game and I’m looking forward to it.

Western United’s Under 21’s team meanwhile played out a 2-2 draw with Box Hill prior to the seniors’ match last Sunday.

Vaughan Coveny’s side will face Victory at 12:30pm this Saturday.
