Western United got a monkey off their back last Thursday, defeating Melbourne City for the first time in club history.

United overturned a half-time deficit to win 2-1 at AAMI Park, thanks to goals from Lachie Wales and Besart Berisha.

Newcastle has lost five games in a row which has seen them sink to 11th on the A-League table.

The Jets have conceded 12 goals during their losing streak.

Previous meetings

Newcastle is remarkably the only team in the league United has never defeated.

United failed to score against the Jets in all three meetings last season.

Mark Rudan’s side lost twice by a 1-0 scoreline, home and away, and also played out a 0-0 draw.

What Mark Rudan is saying

“We’ve got to keep going now.

“We didn’t get too carried away after the City result – there’s no point because we have a game to win tomorrow.

“I’ve been pleased with our performances this year but it hasn’t always matched the results so that’s what we have to work on.

“Some of the teams are starting to draw away… there’s almost a gap now emerging between the top six and the rest, so you’ve got to stay with the pack.

“We’ve got to go to Newcastle with the mindset of doing a job and winning the game, simple as that.”
