Victoria University in partnership with VU Sport, Western United FC, Western Bulldogs, Footscray Community Arts Centre and Bianca Chatfield, are proud to present Kids Active Recess: Westside.

To keep kids active during the current climate, 30-minute sessions will be delivered weekly on the VU in the Community Facebook page by athletes in the west.

United wing-back Josh Risdon is keen to showcase his skills and routine through the Kids Active Recess program, which will be free for all kids to view and participate.

“We’re all in this pandemic together, so to collaborate with Victoria University on this free program for kids is a real privilege for me and for Western United FC,” Risdon said.

“I love football so it’s great to be able to share some of my skills and basic football drills with the community through Victoria University’s networks.

“Being part of growing the sport in Australia and especially in the west of Victoria with Western United is really exciting. It’s great to see the young fans at the matches.”

Risdon discussed the importance of staying active during this isolation period and its benefits to physical and mental health.

“A good fitness routine is always a benefit for kids. During this time we have to be a bit creative with how we train. Even a little bit each day will keep the kids active, entertained and healthy for when they can return to their regular sports and activities.

“Our bodies are designed to move and staying active has so many benefits for your physical and mental health.  Whether it’s a regular walk each day or participating in your favourite sport, physical activity will always be of benefit to you.”

Western United CEO Chris Pehlivanis added: “Western United is proud to be part of Kids Active Recess: Westside and we are looking forward to trying out all the activities each week. I’m working from home with my six year old son who I know will love taking part in these and learning about new sports and will especially like more football tips from Rizzo”

The program launches Tuesday, 11 May at 11:30am with former Diamond and Commenwealth Games gold medalist Bianca Chatfield.
