Berisha: These games are special

In their short history, Western United has played out some memorable games against their rival in blue.

Last season saw United win all three encounters against the team from across town, including an incredible comeback win in their first-ever meeting.

As the two sides prepare to go head-to-head again this Saturday at AAMI Park, United striker Besart Berisha reflected on what this type of game means to him and the Club.

It was round 4 of the 2019/20 season that is most memorable to Berisha.

After trailing 2-0 inside seven minutes, United fought back to record a historic derby win in enemy territory.

“The most important moment was probably the game at Marvel Stadium, the first one” Berisha said.

“There were a lot of supporters, and we won 3-2. It was very emotional for me.

“It’s no secret I share unbelievable history with them so that was the most memorable moment.”

United would enjoy more success against their cross-town rival later in the season.

A 3-1 win in Geelong in round 9 was followed by a 2-1 triumph at Bankwest Stadium, Sydney in July 2020.

The Green and Black are aiming for another win on Saturday, which to Berisha would mean plenty.

“It means a lot, especially for the supporters and the history of the club. They are very special games.

“You want to be there. You want to help, you want to score goals, you want to win these games, they are very special.

“If you want to be the number one club in Melbourne that’s what you have to target, to win these games.”

This game is also unique for Berisha on a personal level, having made over 100 appearences for the navy blue between 2014 and 2018.

It’s a special moment for the striker every time he comes up against his old side.

“Personally it is very emotional, it’s my old club.

“My old club know me and the way I work, and the way I work is that I want to win these games.

“I want to try to create history with my clubs and this is a special occasion, playing against my old club at AAMI Park.”
