Western United captain Alessandro Diamanti has been recognised as the player of the season by Fox Sports, receiving the Alex Tobin Award for his exceptional performances during the 2019/20 Hyundai A-League season.
The award is determined by Fox Sports’ experts, who assign 3, 2 and 1 point(s) each game.
Diamanti received 25 points from 24 games this season, one point ahead of joint-runners ups Diego Castro (Perth Glory) and Riley McGree (Adelaide United).
“On behalf of the club, I congratulate Alino for this achievement,” Western United CEO Chris Pehlivanis said.
“His work on and off the pitch for Western United through our inaugural season has been exemplary.
“We’re honoured to have him as our captain.”
The Italian was man-of-the-match on seven occasions this season (polling three votes each time).
Diamanti has scored seven goals for the Green and Black in 2019/20, while also notching seven assists.
Western United Head Coach Mark Rudan added: “I think I’m running out of words to describe Alino, but I reiterate, as does this achievement, how valuable and important he is to our team and to our club. His leadership, teamwork and effort should be aspired to by all footballers.”
Diamanti and Western United will take on Melbourne City on Wednesday night in their final home-and-away match of the season, before turning their attention to an elimination final against Brisbane Roar or Perth Glory.
